By the way you didn’t choose for this image of Zwarte Piet just as you’re probably not consciously choosing for racism. It’s been instilled in you and I both since childhood. On occasion I used to laugh it off as well (looking back though, it was always with a sense of unease because I knew full well that something wasn’t adding up). The mental blinders close once somebody brings it up: we’ve been culturally indoctrinated; racism is institutionalized. This cultural indoctrination is so strong that we’re probably never going to be completely rid of it. It’s not our fault it exists, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t and shouldn’t take our responsibility to change the tradition.
